Smelly toilet despite weekly cleaning?

Are you sure it is not a septic problem? does it look clean or does it look stained even when clean? Chlorine in the tank is probably not a good idea. Try some more natural things like baking soda and vinegar (you can use together or either one by themselves), or buy some of those minty denture cleaning tablets and drop them in the water.
